| Yesterday, I had a young man kick out one of the door windows. I tried to get another bus, but they told me to drive my route and "bring it in to be repaired" tomorrow(today). I didn't feel it was safe, but they insisted. What would you have done? |

Down it. If somebody disputes you, get the OHSA regulation guys out. [Or whomever does transportation...D-O-T]...under NO circumstances should you be driving around a bus without a window, specifically one in a door! Things could go flying out causing hazards for other drivers or passengers could be injured.  |

I had a door window pop out once (pushed on it when closing the door)...it was fixed before I went on another run.
If I was told by management to keep going, then I would do so as it was thier decision to keep the bus in service. |

| A broken window isn't that big of a deal if you ask me. If the higher ups say go - just go. I'm with Peter, cover it up and move on. Don't waste your time grounding a bus on the side of a road and waiting for a spare. |

| Would I drive it? Yes. Would I tell another driver to continue driving if they felt that it shouldn't be operated? NO. Technically it wouldn't pass a pre-trip in this condition so it shouldn't be driven in this condition. |

Simply stated...our drivers would park it. Inconvenience is no reason to keep driving your route. Are you a park-out? When they said 'bring it in tomorrow to be fixed', would you be doing a morning run before getting to the shop? If you were fifty miles from base with no other bus around, taping it up may be an option. But never a reason to run another route!
What would the public want you to do???? |

| I hear you countgirl, around here, any little problem is taken seriously, one time a student was walking along side one of the buses and jis backpack accidentally his the side turn signal (right after the door) and the bus was taken out of service right then and there. This was at dissmissal in the afternoon, when deemed safe the bus was thrown in reverse and moved out o fthe was allowing the other bsues to pass, but never leaving the school's lot |

| One time a window on my bus's door shattered and they had the bus driver finish the route, then go back to the bus yard and switch into a spare for the next run. It seems kind of silly to wait 30 minutes at a bus stop for a spare when you could finish the route in 10 and then switch buses. Although, it probably is illegal to drive the bus with the missing pane... |

We had a kid who threw a glass bottle from his school bus as it was passing another bus parked on the side of the road. The glass bottle smashed the entire windshield of the other bus. The driver of the damaged bus immediately called her garage and they told her to cover up the damage if possible and wait for a tow truck to get the bus. Another bus gave the driver a lift to get a spare. The windshield was completely smashed. You could not see out of it!
As for the door incident described above, I probably would not drive that bus with students on board. Despite what the higher ups say, I would take the bus to the garage and get a spare. I would also call another bus to finish the route. Lastly, I hope you got that child's name and turned him in! |

Glad to hear the school was responsive to an act of violence, even if it was toward an object! |

Would I drive it? Hecks no! I would drive a spare before I would continue driving that bus. If someone at the garage would tell me it's ok to drive, I would still refuse and drive another bus. I know were the keys are to the spares....
BTW...we have buses that are on the road that shouldn't be. One of our transits is missing the glass to the right front spot mirror. It has been like that since Monday, and the driver is still driving it like that. Another one of our transits right side window pane was hit by a tire...that's right...a tire and it was completely smashed. However, that bus is sitting in the lot and probably will be sitting there until the end of the school year. Our mechanics have problems fixing our buses.... |

| Would I drive it, sure, right to the garage! AND LEAVE IT THERE! You put kids on that bus & you take responsibility for all that happens afterwards, regardless of who says what. If a supervisor orders you to drive it, have them put it in writing AND SIGN IT, leave the yard & call the county sherrif's office, or state pd. I've heard some pretty outrageous things, but that one's up there. |

If I knew the kid that threw the bottle, they would be having problems with Bus9709(me). Your story reminds me of a similar incident that happened om my bus. Some kid threw a hardcover notebook out the window at a oncoming dumptruck and shattered the trucks' windsheild. The next morning a police officer came onboard at school and asked who threw it. Nobody answered, so when we were allowed to get off the bus(after a long lecture), I went with a friend and told the cop who threw it. That kid eventually got suspened. What really scared me though was when the cop said that the dumptruck swerved after the notebook hit the windsheild(it made impact at 90mph)and almost hit another school bus behind us. |

| Your reply has made me think of another incident I remember from 8th grade. A kid threw half a sub sandwich wrapped in foil from there bus into the bus I was riding. His sandwich hit the bus driver's 1 year old son. Luckily he was not hurt. Though she was pretty mad. The kid was later suspended and banned from the bus. |

| WOW, sounds like we work for the same company. One of the drivers had a tree branch hit and break a side mirror. She called it in to the dispatch, they told her to finish her route. The glass was falling out of the window as she was driving, dispatch told her do not seat anyone by the window. IN my opinion, she should of been brought another bus to finish her route. I think this was a real safety hazard. |
